At Cleats4aCause, our mission is to support the Boys' Town School & Community Center in Kingston, Jamaica which seeks to empower people and communities and contribute to nation-building through youth involvement in sports. Founded in 1940 in partnership with the Kingston YMCA and the Jamaica Methodist Church, Boys' Town is fully committed to the development of its youth through sports and education. Located in one of the most impoverished areas of the city, they place significant emphasis on the provision of opportunities to take individuals away from a life of crime and violence. Boys' Town has served as a leading institution for the development of youth (both boys and girls since 1942) in Trench Town, Jamaica and has had a long history of playing football (soccer) and cricket at the highest level.
While on a family trip to Jamaica in 2018, Noah LaGrange, a current 10th grader at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., visited the Boy’s Town School in Trench Town (the home of Bob Marley and the birthplace of reggae). There, he learned from the Director and Head Football Coach that they were in great need of cleats, shin guards, and uniforms. Knowing how much joy playing soccer brought him over the years, Noah decided that he would start collecting soccer cleats for students at Boys’ Town as a way to give back. With the help of his family, friends, teammates, and school, Noah was able to make his dream of giving back to this community a reality. In less than a year after that first visit, he collected, cleaned, and organized over seventy pairs of cleats, along with other soccer equipment and sneakers, and hand-delivered the first shipment in August 2019. Since then, there have been two other trips to Boys' Town to deliver over 150 more pairs of cleats plus jerseys, balls, basketballs, cones, regular sneakers, cricket equipment, nutritional supplements, and more than $600 in cash donations. As Boys' Town's needs have evolved, Cleats4aCause continues to support its mission to empower communities through youth involvement in sports and education.
Despite having a licensed well on site, Boys' Town has been without running water since 2014 due to deteriorating pipes and valve systems. Many of its programs have suffered as a result. This fundraiser is for the rehabilitation of the irrigation system which will allow for the treatment and extraction of potable water.
